Notion Mail shut down, so I built my own Gmail client
I loved Notion Mail.
Not for the AI. For the views. Newsletters in one place, receipts in another, work on its own. I opened one kind of mail at a time and actually got to zero.
Then Notion shut it down on September 22, 2026.
I had already been playing with a small side project that sorted my Gmail into labels. When the shutdown was announced, I didn't want to go back to one long Gmail inbox. So I turned that side project into a full app.
That became Mejl.
It's a Gmail client built around focused views:
- Each view shows only one kind of mail and has its own unread count.
- New mail sorts itself in, with Gmail filter rules or a plain description of what belongs there.
- Your mail stays in Gmail. Nothing to import.
It's free on web, iOS, and Android. Mejl Plus is optional and only adds AI extras.
If you're a Notion Mail user looking for a new home, I wrote a short guide on switching.
Mejl isn't for everyone, and that's fine. If you want to compare first, I also put together honest lists of the best Notion Mail alternatives, Superhuman alternatives, Spark alternatives, and free Gmail clients.
And if you try it, I'd love to hear what you think.
